Your retail clothing store’s business plan requires a well-thought out customer analysis which describes what type of customers will make your store succeed.

Not Too Broad, Not Too Narrow

When choosing your customer target markets, make sure that they are neither too broad nor too narrow. The broader a target market, the more expensive and difficult to reach it and sell to it. For example, if the target market is simply “Residents of the Tri-state Area” this will tell you and readers little about the most effective means of reaching them.

When you open a retail business, your customers purchase smaller quantities; only one or two pieces of clothing. Wholesale clothing provides a greater opportunity for profits since larger quantities are sold at discount prices. The real business opportunity is to offer wholesale brand names; quality clothing at discount prices.

Another option for selling women’s clothing is to offer it at an even lower price than wholesale. Closeout prices offer even brand name labels at incredible prices. The key is to maintain the quality that your customers expect. A name brand implies quality, while wholesale or closeout indicates low prices. If you sell cheap, make sure that the clothing is not cheap. Otherwise, your business will suffer.

To play it safe, you may decide to stick with more classic types of clothing and add in the latest styles and trends as a bit of variety. This will allow more conservative types to help you establish your business, but also offer enough variety to invite potential customers in and get them interested in your clothing line.

Customer Values

For customers in each segment you describe, write about their specific reasons to buy from your store based on their values. Show the difference between each segment, because if two segments have the same values and needs, they could probably be lumped together as one. Don’t detail your promotion methods and product line again here as a way of explanation - those are covered elsewhere in your plan. Do be clear as to why each group listed is a good target for your clothing store
