What Stands Between You and Getting Ahead?

It’s often said that professionals who speak with confidence are more believable and get ahead faster. And it makes sense. When you speak with authority, people listen.

Gosh. If it’s so simple, why wasn’t this taught in school?

Fortunately, in some schools, presentation skills are being taught. It’s usually under the names of public speaking skills or debate club. However, if I were in charge of educational curriculums, there wouldn’t be a single school that didn’t have this as part of the core lesson plan

It’s so foundational. In any field. In any industry. In any market.

Children who can present their ideas advance and get ahead. High school kids. College grads. When you can speak effectively, you get recognition. Opportunity. Job offers. Your communication skills are critical to your success in life.

And it doesn’t stop in school. Today, in business, presentation skills are more important than ever before. Professionals who are comfortable and confident speaking to groups are much more likely to advance in their career.

Think about it. Two professionals are co-workers.

Let’s call them Don and Jack. Don is a fantastic and natural presenter. Clients and prospects often ask to work with him, because he is easy to understand.

Jack is equally qualified and in fact, has more academic training. But he is a shy and reluctant presenter.

Guess how many people ask to work with him?

The answer won’t surprise you. None.
Often people who are more qualified will lag behind in their careers - if they are uncomfortable with presenting.

Don’t let this happen to you.

Ask yourself three key questions:

*Are you comfortable presenting to a group?

*Are you persuasive and genuine on camera?

*Does your success depend on how well you present your ideas?

Let’s examine why these three questions are so important to your success.

In business, many presentations are to a group. This may be a group of clients or prospects. It can be groups of industry associates, leaders or investors. When you are confident in front of groups, you can share ideas and become recognized in your field.

However, if you are not comfortable in front of a group, it’s likely that you will avoid or refuse to speak. This does not make you stand out as a person to be recognized or promoted.

*Are you persuasive and genuine on camera?

More and more business presentations these days require confident delivery on camera. This is much more than reading the teleprompter. To succeed on camera, you need to know how to be authentic and genuine. Your body language, facial expression and tone all add up to convey comfort - or discomfort.

Many professionals who are good in front of groups balk at presenting on camera. It seems impersonal and terribly permanent. What if you mess up? What if you stumble?

There are many things that can go wrong on camera - and you are reaching a huge audience. So little things get magnified. Once you learn the media skills to be yourself on camera, a whole new arena opens up.
*Does your success depend on how well you present your ideas?

Because you’re in business and sales, your answer is surely, “yes!” You have to present ideas, services, solutions and strategies. Your success depends on it. Whether you are selling products or promoting leadership strategies, your presentation can make or break the results.
