There are many ways to make custom printed labels greener. One way to make the process greener is to reduce waste all through the process. A great way to reduce waste is with the use of a digital press. When a digital press is used you do not have output film positives created and solvents are not used to make plates. A closed loop system which recycles left over ink means less ink will end up in a landfill.

Another great way to green up the production of custom labels is to use paper types that contain recycled materials. These papers will have labels showing that they have a particular amount of Post Consumer Waste. You can find these types of papers in a wide array of colors and finishes and are very printable.

You could also think about using 100% compostable label materials. These materials are made to completely compost quickly and leave behind no plastic residues. One great compostable material is Polyactic Acid (PAA). This label film face stock is created using corn and is available in both clear and white. It is produced from a plant source which is very renewable and is a great replacement for polypropylene or polyester.

Acetate is a versatile label film that quickly composts. This strong paper works great for the production of labels. It is also produced from a resource which is renewable. There are many renewable materials that are great for printing custom labels. One such material is Fasson Tree Free which is a facestock produced from a combination of bamboo pulp, sugar cane, and cotton linters.

Another great product which is environmental friendly is the 40# Natural Kraft Liner (40NK). It does without the bleaching process but still performs very well for stripping and die cutting. It can be used for a variety of printing applications including green custom labels. To ensure you are getting a green product buy from a company which sells items which have received certification by a forest conservation agency like the Sustainable Forestry Initiative or the Forest Stewardship Council.
