Air Conditioner Repair: A Good Business

It’s the middle of the summer, your air conditioning unit is broken, and you’re a little reluctant to spend hundreds of dollars to have a technician come to your home. Well, before you start thumbing through the Yellow Pages to find a company that can repair your unit, there may be a few things you can do repair your air conditioning system yourself.

One of the first things you’ll need for air conditioner repair is the owner’s manual. If you’re just getting a unit installed, be sure to keep the manual and all the written materials that come with the unit so that you can refer to it if anything happens with your air conditioning. If you don’t have the manual anymore, you may be able to find the information you need online if you have a unit from companies like Kenmore or Lennox. You can also call the manufacturer to receive a manual before you start the air conditioner repair process.

Before you begin checking the unit for problems, make sure that it is completely off. You’ll have to use the electrical panel for shutoff, or you can press the disconnect or ‘off’ button which may be located next to the outdoor compressor in your home. Be sure that all leaves and dirt are raked and swept away from the air conditioner, so that you won’t damage the parts of the unit while you’re inspecting it. Remove the protective grille from the fins of the unit, and a use a soft brush to get rid of all the dirt that may be caught in the fins–you may also want to vacuum the fins with the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner.

After you unscrew and lift the grill, make sure that you’re not damaging any wires, and from inside the unit, you’ll need to hose out the fins, and you may be required to lubricate the motor for air conditioner repair–but be sure not to over lubricate.

Now, you’re ready to reassemble the unit. Be sure to put all the parts together in the same order you took them apart. Then, test the unit by turning it back on and set the thermostat. Keep running the unit for a few minutes, and check the pipes that are connected to the condenser unit. One of the pipes should feel cool, and the other should feel warm. This means that the temperature of the air will be even throughout your home or office. If you find that the pipes are the same temperature, you may need to call a technician if the temperatures don’t change within a few minutes of your air conditioner repair. Good luck!
